There is a big wave of new female rappers coming out of the Korean peninsula. In the last 3 months alone they have been a multitude of talent getting ready to make a move on the rap scene that we love so much. One of these promising female rappers is Dew.

Who are you and where in South Korea are you from?
Hi! I'm Dew. I was born in Daegu, and currently I'm living alone in Seoul. It's been about a month and a half since I've moved here to Seoul!
How did you get your rap name?
I've enjoyed drawing comic strips from when I was young. "Dew" was one of the main female characters that frequently appeared in the stories. It was a character in which I reflected my actual self, so I felt very affectionate toward Dew. I brought this character's name and made it my rap name. (Plus, my actual name is Iseul Lim, and Iseul is a Korean word that means "dew.")
How long have you been rapping?
I've enjoyed listening to Hip Hop music since when I was in Middle school. In second grade of Middle school, I listened to the song "Anybody" by Dynamic Duo, San-E, and JYP, which was a remake of the song "Nobody" by Wondergirls. I sang along the song "Anybody" and this got me interested in rapping. My first time writing lyrics and recording for myself was in second grade of High school. At the time I didn't have proper recording equipment, so I used to record on headset microphones. When I listen to the stuff I made at the time, I burst into bouts of laughter,(lol). After I got into University, I became a member of the school Hip Hop club, and starting from a few months ago, I began to take this music business more seriously.
Describe your style of rapping.
I currently make bright and upbeat songs rather than dark and gloomy ones. I consider myself a rapper with a good delivery, and I think of my tone as bright and cute(?), but others around me say that strong and aggressive music seems to suit me. I can also serve as a vocal, so I can cover a wide range of musical styles!
What inspires you to write raps?
I tend to write a lot of autobiographic lyrics. (I believe the 25 years of my life were pretty much filled with ups and downs!) So I try to tell stories of my own experiences by comparing them to good subjects or fun concepts. Also, I am a design major, and I think writing lyrics and making music has some similarities with drawing pictures. Therefore, I have a habit of searching for good idea sources and images that inspire me. (Sometimes I even make the artwork first and then move on to thinking about how to make the song!
Are you part of a crew, if so what is the name of your crew?
I currently take part in two crews. The first one "Lazywave", a Hip Hop crew in which members like ACeno Seno, Pato, Ghilliesuit, and Banena are in. The other one is an art crew, "Blanket House." These two crews are both at a starting point, so please root for us!
What year and month and were you born?
My birthday is August 22, 1994. I am 23 years old in American age and 25 in Korean age. I was born on the Year of the Dog (bow-wow!) and my zodiac sign is Leo(growl!).
Do you have any siblings?
I am an only child! That's why my parents are worried about me living alone in Seoul. T.T
Do you play any sports or watch any sports?
I started learning Taekwondo right after I got into elementary school.
I have learned for quite long, so I have a third-degree black belt. I've quit doing Taekwondo, but the sense of Taekwondo still lives on in my body, so my athletic ability is pretty good!
What is your favorite Korean meal?
I am not a picky eater; I eat everything well, and I'm a gourmand as well. If I have my mom's Kimchi-jjigae and Japchae, I have no problem emptying 3 bowls of rice! (Since I can't go to my hometown often these days, I miss food that my mom made for me.)
What rappers do you look up to?
I think rappers who perform well and in a cute manner and thus shine on stages are very cool. Nafla, Loopy, and so on! And I also love rappers who write good lyrics with strong messages in them! Now that I think of it, there are so many rappers that I need to respect.
Have you ever been drunk and woke up not knowing where you are?
I usually don't enjoy drinking. One glass of soju makes my face look like a volcano about to erupt. When I drink, the temperature goes up so high in my head that I can't even hear well. Well, but I like drinking parties! It's just that I don't drink. (lol) The last time I was blacked out from drinking was in the summer of the year when I was 21. When I woke up, I had already cleaned up my room and I was neatly in blankets. I guess I just go home when I'm heavily drunk. (lol)

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
5 years later would make me.... 30 years old. As an owner of a baby face, people wouldn't even notice my age! Maybe not the best of the best, but I wish to be a rapper with a unique style!

현재 랩 네임을 갖게 된 계기가 있으신가요?
어릴 때부터 만화를 즐겨 그렸어요. 자주 등장시키던 여주인공의 이름이 ‘듀’ 였습니다!
제 자신을 투영시켜 그렸기에 참 애정이 가던 캐릭터였어요. 이 캐릭터의 이름을 가져와서 ‘듀’라는 랩네임을 짓게 되었습니다. (또 단순하게는 제 본명이 ‘임이슬’ 인데 이슬을 영어로 하면 Dew 이기도 하지요! )
랩한 지 얼마나 되셨나요?
중학교 때부터 힙합음악을 즐겨 들었어요. 중학교 2학년 때 ‘Wondergirls-Nobody’를 재해석한 'Dynamic Duo, SAN-E, JYP-Anybody' 를 듣고 처음으로 따라 부르면서 흥미를 가지게 되었고,고등학교 2학년 때 처음으로 가사를 쓰고 녹음을 했어요. 당시 갖춰진 녹음 장비가 없어서 MP3, 헤드셋 마이크에 녹음을 하곤 했는데 지금 들어보면 웃음이... :) 대학에 입학하고 취미로 힙합 동아리를 했고 몇 개월 전 부터 진지하게 음악을 시작했습니다.
본인의 랩 스타일을 설명해주세요.
현재는 어둡고 우울한 음악보다는 밝고 통통 튀는 음악을 주로 하고 있어요. 발성이 좋고 톤이 밝고 귀여운 (?) 편이라고 생각하는데 주변에서는 강하고 거친 음악이 잘 어울린다고들 해요. 또 보컬도 겸하고 있어 다채롭고 넓은 스타일 소화가 가능합니다!
가사를 쓸 때 영감을 주로 어디에서 받으시나요?
평소 자전적인 가사를 많이 쓰는 편입니다. (25년을 꽤 파란만장하게 살아왔다고 생각해요!) 그래서 제가 겪은 것들을 좋은 소재, 재밌는 컨셉등에 대입해서 풀어내려 합니다. 또 저는 그림을 그리고 디자인을 전공했는데 가사를 쓰고 음악을 만드는 것 또한 이와 비슷하다고 생각 합니다. 그래서 영감을 받기 위해 좋은 아이디어 소스, 이미지 등을 리서치 하는 습관이 있습니다. (가끔은 아트워크 작업부터 먼저 하고 곡을 생각하기도 한답니다!)

가리는 거 없이 다 잘 먹고 대식가입니다. 엄마가 해주신 김치찌개, 잡채 만 있으면 밥 3공기는 거뜬히 먹을 수 있어요.

가장 존경하는 래퍼가 누구인가요?
공연을 멋있고 귀엽게 잘하는 래퍼들, 무대에서 빛나는 래퍼가 가장 멋있다고 생각합니다. 나플라, 루피..등등! 또 가사를 잘 쓰고 그 메시지에 힘이 담겨있는 래퍼도 사랑해요! 너무 리스펙할 만한 래퍼들이 많군요.
술에 잔뜩 취해 필름이 끊어진 후 눈을 떠보니 모르는 장소에 있었던 경험이 있나요?
평소 술을 즐겨하지 않아요. 소주 한잔만 마셔도 얼굴이 화산처럼 폭발할 것 같이 변해요. 열이 올라 귀가 잘 안들릴 지경까지... 술자리는 좋아해요! 다만 술을 마시지 않을뿐 lol
마지막으로 술에 엄청 취해 필름이 끊긴 게 21살 여름의 기억, 눈을 뜨니 방청소까지 다 해놓고 곱게 이불을 덮고 있었어요. 많이 취하면 그냥 집에 가는 것 같아요.lol
